Third month in a row and I’m reviewing yet another thought-provoking book by prolific Maine author Nomar Slevik! Its title is UFOs Over Maine Military Bases.
Over the years, UFOs sighted over military installations and nuclear sites across our nation have become a fairly common phenomenon of interest and the state of Maine has certainly had its fair share of such documented incidents. Nomar compiles in this book a comprehensive review of such reports going back decades from prominent Maine military installations as Dow Air Force Base, Loring Air Force Base, Presque Isle Air Force Base, and Brunswick Naval Air Station.
While most attention to such reported occurrences is given to more widely known sites such as Malmstrom AFB, Holloman AFB, Minot AFB, to name but a few, without question Maine certainly has a most impressive archival database of UFOs visiting military bases there too. One former airman years later shared with MUFON a series of events he witnessed at Maine’s Dow AFB back around 1963-64 including mysterious pulsating spheres of light, the sighting of a 8-9 foot tall hairy bipedal creature on a hill, and two intruders taken into custody who didn’t even look human, with grey skin and emotionless expressions on their faces.
Now that’s high strange that ranks right up there with the best of them.
For those who may already have a copy of Nomar’s comprehensive volume UFOs Over Maine 10th Anniversary Edition, the accounts found in UFOs Over Maine Military Bases can be found there as well. Otherwise, if this is an area you wish to concentrate your main focus on the UFO subject, this is the book you might wish to purchase instead.

This book’s author, Charles Liu, Ph.D., a professor of astrophysics at the City University of New York’s College of Staten Island, an associate with Hayden Planetarium and Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History, a recurring guest on Neil deGrasse Tyson’s podcast Star Talk! Bringing the Universe Down to Earth, a host of his own podcast The LIUniverse.
An impressive man of science who strives in this book to distinguish reality from pseudoscience though he confesses he’s a super-fan of science fiction, admitting his own collection of thousands of comic books going back to his childhood. He adds, “Science and non-science aren’t mutually exclusive at all; they go together beautifully and joyfully. Real science inspires us to imagine and create what we don’t yet know is real. Then those creations of our imagination inspire us to investigate and explore the unknown so that we can learn even more real things.”
Professor Liu makes the distinction between creative thought and imagination and individuals who spread lies and falsehoods, invent elaborate conspiracies, and blur the lines between real science and anti-science. He thoughtfully explores the scientific possibilities of things like alien life, artificial intelligence, faster-than-light travel, extra dimensions, death rays, telepathy, teleportation, time travel, etc., etc. He does a great job of trying to separate the wheat from the chaff, also called the signal from the noise. He presents much science and scientific theory that’s not only entertaining and educational, but also truly grounding.
However, in the long run some areas may still be too premature for us to fully discern and process accurately the potential true and complete dimensions of what we may behold someday in the future. Certainly, we must continue the pursuit of objective, creative, and discerning exploration with scientific strategies and experimentations as we strive to understand and uncover those things that we may not yet fully comprehend.
Books like what Professor Charles Liu has written probe and ponder the challenging mysteries and questions that still linger before us, striving to present a path forward where science is sometimes said to be stranger than fiction!
