This book is especially good for newcomers to ufology as it reviews the many classic cases that have garnered major attention through the years, from close UFO encounters, like Kenneth Arnold, the Cash-Landrum Incident, the silver disk over Chicago's O'Hare; to up close and personal alien confrontations as with Vermont's Bluff Ledge incident, Travis Walton, Betty and Barney Hill, Janet Russell, the Brooklyn Bridge abduction of Linda Napolitano to alleged crashes, from Roswell in 1947 to Kecksberg, Pennsylvania in 1965, to Aurora, Texas, way back in 1897, to the extraordinary Battle of Los Angeles incident of 1942, and many more.

While some of these classics may be a bit more controversial and even more questionable than others (of course, hard-line skeptics will consider all such cases to be within that context), the author also introduces a number of interesting personal experiences from his own life. For instance, through the author's entire lifetime he had been seeing what he thought was “ghosts.” In fact, he had an aunt, back when he was about age 6, who said she saw a tall, black figure with a big head, come into the room through the wall of a summer New York bungalo, bend over the young Joseph, sleeping at the time, and touch him on his head. Then years later in 2013, as an adult, he was attending a CE-5 meditation, designed to call in aliens, and afterwards he began to have various anomalous experiences, realizing also that aliens had been meddling in his life from childhood, at times mistaken for ghosts it now seemed.

The author also has ventured on the road to a few noteworthy UFO sites, like the White Mountains of New Hampshire area where the Hill incident happened in 1961, or New York's UFO hotbed Pine Bush, where Joseph and a friend not only saw strange things in the sky themselves, but even took a daytime photograph of one spherical object that's included in the book.

This Indiana author, a member of the 765 Paranormal group, described as an Indiana-based paranormal research team, is also the author of “Lost in the Darkness” and “Grim Shadows.” I'd say that it's safe to say that he's drawn to dark subject matter. VILE is certainly a very dark compendium of the world's most notorious sociopathic serial killers who committed horribly depraved acts against their helpless victims, describing the abusive backgrounds of these murderers that doubtless contributed to their later despicable acts of horror on others.

The accounts include the well-known cases of Jack the Ripper, Jeffrey Dahmer, Ed Gein and others, while lesser known grisly stories like Gordon Stewart Northcott, an ax murderer and pedophile, and Tsumoto Miyazaki, Japan's child killer, are included.

Ufologically, Donald is a kindred spirit. Back from the mid to late 1960s, he worked in Washington, D.C., with Donald Keyhoe and Richard Hall at NICAP (National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena) headquarters. In 1970, he co-produced and appeared on The Barry Farber Show (WOR, NYC). “My goal, since 1957, has been to spread the truth,” he writes me.
